workshops
The content I teach in my workshops is not for the faint of heart. I invite students to dig deep, both into the complexity of the work we engage, and their approaches to their own writing. I love pushing them to think differently, darkly—bravely. Everything around us holds a deeper context; developing the skills to identify nuance and meaning in visual art makes for more profound engagement in the themes of one’s own life.
The “your characters” and “Visual Language for Writers” series of workshops began in London in 2019. I am always open to collaborative and curated opportunities, and would love to work with museums, festivals, and adult education centers to offer visual analysis classes.
COMING SEPTEMBER 14
No, Dear Magazine is graciously presenting my next workshop!
"Look Inside Me, See Through Me" is a workshop on using visual language in writing to deepen emotional affect and develop a memorable voice. Along with the work of fellow writers, we'll also be trying some exercises using still photography and film clips.
The following video highlights content from previous workshops, as well as my cinematic PowerPoint design style. “Permission” was a three-hour course on using cinema and Jungian archetypes for writing through dense feelings of grief and fear. The workshop was for writers having an especially difficult time with the pandemic lockdowns.
